LOCALEAD

Google quietly rolled out a campaign type that most Warangal business owners have never heard of, and their agencies are switching accounts to it without explaining what changes. It is called AI Max for Search, and it is the biggest shift in Google Search advertising since responsive search ads replaced the old expanded text ads.

I worked on the maker side of these systems - the search ad extensions, sitelinks, description lines, favicon attributes and dynamic callouts that every Google Ads account now runs on - before starting LocaLeAd here in Warangal. This post is the explanation I give when a business owner asks the fair question: "my agency switched something called AI Max on - what is actually happening to my money?"

What is AI Max for Search, in one sentence?

AI Max for Search is a Google Ads campaign mode that uses AI to match your ads to more searches (including broad and even keyword-less matching), write its own headline combinations from your landing page, and send traffic to deeper pages it thinks are relevant - more reach and less control, with your cost per lead decided by how well you feed it.

3 layersof AI matching in AI Max: broad match expansion, search-term matching (keyword-less), and AI headline rewriting from your landing page
1 reportbecomes your whole defence: the search terms report - where AI-matched spend shows up and where you cut it
5 checksto complete before switching AI Max on - miss them and the AI happily harvests junk traffic

How AI Max differs from the Search campaigns you know

A classic Search campaign is a vending machine: you load exact keywords, Google shows your ad when someone types them, you pay per click. AI Max loosens every part of that chain at once.

What Classic Search campaign AI Max for Search
MatchingYour keywords, your match types - phrase and exact give controlBroad match expansion on by default, plus search-term matching: your ad can show on searches with no keyword at all, matched from your landing page
HeadlinesYour responsive search ads, your copy, your orderAI can write additional headlines from your landing page content (final URL expansion) - your copy still shows, but so does Google's
LandingsAd goes to the URL you choseAI can send the click to a different, deeper page it thinks fits the query better
Brand safetySimple: you bid your brand terms or notNeeds explicit configuration: brand inclusions and exclusions - otherwise the AI may "win" searches for your own brand you were already winning free
ControlYou decide where every rupee goesYou decide the boundaries - the AI decides the rest. The boundaries are the job.

The honest summary: AI Max trades control for reach. Done carelessly, your cost per lead climbs while reports look busier than ever. Done deliberately, it finds customers your keyword list never contained - including Telugu-language queries your account was never set up to catch.

What the AI actually harvests (and why your search terms report is now everything)

AI Max expands matching in three layers, and each one pulls in a different kind of traffic. Figure 1 lays the three layers side by side - notice how the column on the right changes as you go down: reach grows, control shrinks, and your weekly work grows to compensate.

Fig. 1 AI MAX - WHAT THE AI HARVESTS, LAYER BY LAYER Reach grows down the stack. Control shrinks. Your weekly work replaces it. LAYER 1 - BROAD MATCH EXPANSION Your keywords match rephrasings and synonyms and related intent you never typed out Risk: medium - closest to classic broad match LAYER 2 - SEARCH-TERM MATCHING Your ad can serve on a search with NO keyword at all - matched from your landing page content Risk: high - the AI guesses from your website LAYER 3 - AI HEADLINE + LANDING REWRITE AI writes extra headlines from your page and may reroute clicks to deeper URLs it prefers Risk: medium - check the ad-asset report monthly THE TRADE-OFF REACH grows ↓ CONTROL shrinks ↓ YOUR WORK grows ↓ The search terms report is the only place where all three layers are visible - and prunable. YOUR DEFENCE + negative keywords + brand exclusions + specific landing pages + weekly review habit Feed the AI well and it feeds you. Feed it a thin page and loose settings, and it eats your budget.
Figure 1: The three harvesting layers of AI Max. As reach grows down the stack, your control shrinks - the difference is replaced by weekly discipline: negatives, brand rules, specific landing pages and the search-terms review. The report is the only place all three layers become visible and prunable.

Here is the trap. With classic phrase match, an unrelated search simply never triggers your ad. With AI Max, the search terms report fills with queries the AI decided were relevant - job seekers landing on a clinic's "careers" page, "free" searches on a builder's ad, neighbouring-city traffic you never serve. Figure 2 shows what that report actually looks like in the two regimes.

Fig. 2 ONE WEEK OF SEARCH TERMS - TWO REGIMES Illustrative rows, real shape. The junk always looks plausible at first glance. CLASSIC PHRASE MATCH WEEK "dentist near hanamkonda" ✓ lead "teeth cleaning cost warangal" ✓ lead "best dental clinic warangal" ✓ lead "root canal price telangana" ~ maybe "dental hospital karimnagar" ~ maybe JUNK SHARE: small matching only stretched your phrase AI MAX WEEK - SAME BUDGET "dentist open sunday near me" ✓ lead "dental clip telugu lo" ✓ lead "bsc nursing jobs warangal" ✗ junk "free tooth extraction camp" ✗ junk "dental college admission fee" ✗ junk "hyderabad implant specialist" ✗ junk "salary of dentist per month" ✗ junk JUNK SHARE: large - until pruned AI matched from page content + language The AI rows are not random - they are plausible. That is the danger. Each ✗ row above is one negative keyword away from never costing you again.
Figure 2: What the search terms report looks like in each regime. Classic phrase match shows a short, mostly relevant list. AI Max shows a long, partly brilliant, partly wasteful one - including Telugu and Tenglish queries your keyword list never had (which is the upside) sitting beside jobs, fees and freebie hunters (which is the cost). Both are found in the same place: the report.

None of the waste is Google's fault. It is the campaign's diet: the AI eats what your landing page and settings feed it. The accounts that win run one simple weekly loop - Figure 3 is the whole discipline on one screen.

Fig. 3 THE WEEKLY LOOP THAT DECIDES WIN OR BLEED 1. AI MATCHES WIDE Search terms report fills with queries you never typed or planned 2. YOU READ IT WEEKLY Sort by cost. One question per row: would I pay for this customer? 3. CUT AND SEED Negatives in days, not weeks. Winners become new keyword seeds Each loop: junk share falls, real-enquiry share rises, CPL falls with it Skip the loop and the junk never leaves - CPL climbs until someone blames "the AI"
Figure 3: AI Max is a system, not a switch. The campaign that wins is the one whose search terms report is read every week and pruned hard. Week one is always the messiest - normal and temporary, if the loop runs. An unwatched AI Max account is an unwatched tap.

The 5 checks before you switch AI Max on

If your agency proposed AI Max, these are the five things that must already be true - Figure 4 shows them as a gate: pass all five and the switch is rational; fail any one and the fix comes first. If they cannot answer these, the switch is premature - however good the pitch sounds.

# Check Why it decides your cost per lead
1Conversion tracking is verified, not assumedAI Max's automation optimises toward whatever signal you feed it. If WhatsApp clicks are tracked but real closed deals are not, the AI optimises toward chat openers, not customers. Feed it truth or it will scale noise.
2Negative keyword list is seeded (30-50 terms minimum)Free, free, free. "Jobs", "salary", "free", "course", "government scheme", neighbouring cities you do not serve - seed them before day one, because the first week of AI matching is the most wasteful you will ever pay for.
3Brand settings are explicitDecide on brand inclusions/exclusions deliberately. Without them, AI Max may match your ads to your own brand name - spending money to win searches you already won free via SEO and your Google Business Profile (Figure 5 shows this trap).
4Landing pages answer real questionsThe AI reads your page to decide which searches match (Layer 2) and writes headlines from it (Layer 3). A thin, vague page produces thin, vague matching. Pages that name the service, city, price range and areas served feed the AI the right vocabulary.
5A weekly search-terms review is scheduledNot monthly - weekly, for the first month. Every junk query gets a negative keyword within days of eating your budget. This single habit is the difference between AI Max winners and AI Max victims.
Fig. 4 THE 5-CHECK GATE - BEFORE AI MAX GOES ON All five pass → switch on. Any one fails → fix that first. The AI waits. 1 Conversion tracking verified end-to-end feeds the AI truth, not noise 2 30-50 negative keywords seeded jobs, free, fees, other cities 3 Brand inclusions / exclusions decided stops self-cannibalisation 4 Landing pages specific: service, city, price the AI reads and rewrites from these 5 Named owner reviews search terms weekly one focused hour, first month daily-ish 5/5 PASS → SWITCH ON Any fail → fix first, switch later If your agency cannot answer these five in one call, the account is not ready.
Figure 4: The pre-switch gate. Each check exists because its absence is a known failure mode: unverified tracking optimises toward noise, unseeded negatives waste week one, unset brand rules cannibalise free traffic, thin pages teach the AI the wrong vocabulary, and no review owner means the junk never leaves.

Check 3 deserves its own picture, because it is the silent budget leak nobody notices on a dashboard - Figure 5 shows what happens to a brand search with and without the rules set.

Fig. 5 SOMEONE SEARCHES YOUR BRAND NAME. WHO PAYS? WITHOUT AI MAX - COST: ₹0 ad slot: competitor or empty (their ₹, or nobody's) Your Google Business Profile FREE click - earned Your website, organic result FREE click - earned Brand intent converts at the highest rate and every one of those clicks was free. AI MAX, NO BRAND RULES - COST: ₹ Your own ad - AI matched your brand PAID click - for a customer you had free Your Google Business Profile (below the ad) same free click - now second choice Your website, pushed down organic slot still there, less seen The report looks GREAT - brand CPL is superb because you are paying for customers you had. Fix: brand exclusions (protect the free clicks) or brand inclusions (only if a competitor bids your name). Decide deliberately - never let the default decide.
Figure 5: The self-cannibalisation trap. With brand rules unset, AI Max happily "wins" searches for your own name - converting free earned clicks into paid ones. The campaign metrics even improve, because brand clicks convert beautifully. This is why check 3 exists, and why a rising report can hide a falling business.

Who should NOT switch AI Max on yet

Most agencies will not say this, so here it is plainly. AI Max is the wrong tool for certain accounts - switching it off again after a bad month costs more than never switching it on. Figure 6 turns the whole decision into one path.

Fig. 6 SHOULD YOUR ACCOUNT USE AI MAX? ONE PATH. START: conversion tracking verified lead → customer? NO → FIX TRACKING always tracking first YES Monthly budget ≥ ₹25,000 room for discovery traffic? NO → CLASSIC PHRASE tight control, tight budget YES One hour weekly for the search-terms review? NO → DON'T ENABLE unwatched tap bleeds YES ENABLE AI MAX — run the Figure 3 weekly loop for month one then judge on cost per verified enquiry, never on clicks or impressions Judged early, adjusted fast, reversible always.
Figure 6: The AI Max decision path. Three honest questions - tracking truth, budget room, review time - and the right answer falls out. Note what is NOT on the list: "the agency recommends it". Recommendation is not a criterion; readiness is.

Who AI Max genuinely suits

Flip side, honestly stated. AI Max earns its place when at least two of these are true: your budget is ₹25,000+ a month and you can afford discovery traffic; your landing pages are specific and well-written (they feed the AI); your tracking distinguishes enquiry from customer; and someone in the account reviews search terms weekly. In return you get the one thing keyword lists can never give: queries that did not exist in your plan - including the Telugu-language searches a large share of Warangal customers actually type, which classic English-built keyword lists silently miss. AI's language expansion catches them naturally (the "dental clip telugu lo" row in Figure 2 is exactly this kind of win).

Does AI Max replace responsive search ads and the work on extensions?

No - it sits on top of them. RSAs, sitelinks, description lines, callouts and dynamic callouts are still the ad real estate AI Max serves; the AI merely writes additional headline variants and matches more queries into that machinery. Accounts with rich, well-built extensions and a clean landing page give AI Max better raw material. Weak accounts just get weak ads shown in more places.

What it costs a Warangal business - the honest math

AI Max does not change auction prices; it changes which searches you appear on. Your cost per click stays what Warangal keywords cost (roughly ₹5-60 depending on industry - the breakdown is in our Google Ads cost guide for Warangal). What changes is the mix: more queries, cheaper ones on average, a higher junk share unless pruned. Net cost per lead after the first pruning month typically lands near where classic phrase match landed - sometimes better, rarely dramatically, because the savings come from cheap long-tail clicks while the cost comes from the review work. The accounts that lose are the ones paying for junk nobody removed.

One more honest number: the review work itself. Budget one focused hour a week for the first month. That hour is the real price of AI Max - and it is also the reason agencies love it: it looks like magic to the client and requires exactly the discipline most retainer contracts quietly drop.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Max for Search the same as Performance Max?
No. Performance Max runs across every Google surface - Search, Maps, YouTube, Gmail, Display - with keywords only as suggestions and almost no search-term visibility. AI Max for Search stays within Search campaigns: you keep keywords, negatives, your ad real estate and (limited but real) search-term reporting. Think of AI Max as Performance-Max-style AI applied inside a Search campaign you still control.
Why did my cost per lead go up after my agency switched on AI Max?
Almost always the same three causes, in order: junk queries eating spend that nobody is negatively matching out (read the search terms report - Figure 2 shows what to look for), conversion tracking optimising toward the wrong action, and brand-term spend cannibalising free organic traffic (Figure 5). Ask your agency for the search terms export for the AI-Max-on period, sorted by cost. If they cannot produce it or will not discuss it, that is the answer.
Can AI Max write bad or wrong headlines for my business?
It can write flat ones, and occasionally wrong ones - pulled from landing page text that was never meant to be an ad line. Your original responsive search ad copy still runs; AI-written variants appear additionally and their performance is reported. Check the ad-asset report monthly: keep what beats your copy, and fix the landing page text that produced anything misleading.
Does AI Max help with Telugu-language searches?
Yes - this is one of its genuinely strong points for Warangal. AI language expansion matches translated and transliterated queries (Telugu script and Tenglish romanisations) to your campaign without you building separate Telugu keyword lists. Your landing page should still make the offer clear; the matching, AI handles well. For deliberately bilingual campaigns, our Telugu-English campaign setup playbook covers the structured approach.
How do I turn AI Max off if it is not working?
In campaign settings, under AI Max controls: switch search-term matching and headline/landing expansion off, and the campaign reverts to behaving like a classic Search campaign with your original keywords and copy. Keep the negatives you added along the way - they made the account better regardless. If results were poor, examine the search terms history before leaving: the lessons transfer to any future campaign.
What should I ask my agency before they enable AI Max?
Five questions, in order: Is conversion tracking verified end-to-end? What negatives are seeded? How are brand terms handled? Which pages will the AI read, and are they specific enough? And who reviews the search terms report, how often? Confident answers to all five mean the switch is ready. Hesitation on any of them means wait a month - the AI is not going anywhere.
